In October 2024 two SPANC Racing athletes (and two others yet to be convinced to join) cycled 450kms from Pontypridd in Wales to ‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Dutch town. Ably supported by Matthew Pennell (and briefly by Gareth Pennell) the group passed through 3 countries over 4 days before enjoying an incredible welcome in the capital of the province of North Brabant.
Following a brief service of Remembrance, day 1 took the group from the 53rd Welch Memorial in Pontypridd common to the Severn bridge and onto Swindon for their first overnight stay. The weather was good and spirits were high as the group passed through seemingly endless county towns and village. Marc Jones, representing Rhondda Cynon taf CBC, was the ‘newbie’ to the group but soon showed off his climbing skills to be first to the top of most of the climbs.
